My name is Raquel and I’m from Brazil.
I’m seventeen years old and if I have to define myself, I would say I love life. I love animals and all that involves nature. I like to take pictures (of course!), to read books, to watch movies and series, and listen to music. I fight for what I think is right.
I always liked to take pictures. Since I was very young, I enjoy being around cameras and playing with them. I believe that liking Photography is something that I inherit from my mom’s family; it’s in my genes. A big part of my relatives like to take pictures, and in my house in Brazil, we have a lot of slides and negatives from the old times. Part of my childhood was recorded by a camera recorder that my mom bought and use to record me, so when I was older, I could see myself when I was a child. I think this is awesome and I’m thankful for my mom for giving her time to record the phases of my life.
The first camera I got was a Nikon D3100, in 2010, when I was 11 years old. My mom and I used it for some time until we got a problem in the lenses, so we decide to change. Between that time, we also had compact cameras which we used. In 2013, I searched in the Internet for a long time and bought my camera, a Canon T5i. It was one of my best investments. I liked the model and, as time goes by, I study more about the configurations and how to use the modes of the camera. In 2015, I bought my first zoom lens, a Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.5, and my first fixed lens, a Canon 50mm 1.8 STM; this last is my favorite one. Since then, I have been studying and trying to improve my pictures.
When came the opportunity of doing a senior project about something I would like to work in the future, I knew what I wanted to do; something related to photography. I would like to work with pictures at some moment in my life, and I saw, in this senior project opportunity, a chance of getting better pictures and learning more about it. My mentor, Eric Sines, helped me with an idea for my project. In the first place, I thought about taking pictures of my friends in Long Creek, but then, Eric came with the idea of pictures that tell stories. Choosing some members of the Long Creek Community and telling their stories by pictures.
This project gave me the opportunity of meeting some very nice people and getting to know them better. I’m very grateful for the chance of getting into their lives and for them to share things with me. I loved every minute that we spent together.
So that is me and a little about my story. In this project, you will learn more about the story of people who, in a certain way, make a change in the Long Creek Community.
Hope you enjoy!
